The number of children, who are overweight, is increasing, worldwide. Overweight and obesity during childhood puts a child at a greater risk of type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, asthma and other respiratory problems, sleep disorders, liver disease, noncommunicable diseases (NCDs), premature death and disability in adulthood. And during childhood, overweight and obesity can have a negative impact on a child’s self-esteem, which can lead to depression and social isolation.

  1. What causes childhood overweight?

Unhealthy eating -increased intake of foods high in fat and sugar, less intake of fruits and vegetables and physical inactivity due to the frequent use of electronic devices for games, limited outdoor recreational activities etc. contribute to childhood obesity. Socio-economic factors (wealth, transportation, environment etc.) can also influence childhood overweight and obesity.
