Smoking tobacco is to be avoided completely as it is harmful to the body. If you smoke, remember the only requirement for smoking is; no smoking, so begin by deciding to quit. Here are some useful tips to help you quit.

  1. Have a plan. For example reduce the number of cigarette sticks by one each week.
  2. When you feel like smoking, eat some fruits and vegetables and drink water and fruit juice. This will make the cigarette bitter and discourage you from smoking.
  3. Whenever you feel the urge to smoke, quickly engage yourself in a physical activity and go into the company of friends who do not smoke. These can minimise the cravings.
  4. Try not to carry cigarettes with you when going out. You can carry gums and lozenges to munch on when your mouth feels empty. Additionally, do not keep cigarette with you in the house. These measures will reduce the number of times you reach out for cigarette when you have the cravings. Gradually, you will reduce the number of times and number of cigarette sticks.
  5. Avoid the company of friends who smoke, as their company is likely to influence you to smoke.
  6. Get support from family and friends and also speak with a counsellor or related professional. They can support you to quit.
