You are poised to becoming a healthier you but think it will be expensive. You are not alone. When I conducted a survey on factors that influence people’s healthy lifestyle choices, cost was was rated among the highest factors.

The good news is healthy living does not have to break the bank. Here are simple tips to live healthy on a low budget.

  1. Compare Prices: Look out for markets or supermarkets with lower prices and also compare food prices from different markets.
  2. Buy in Bulk: Buying food items in bulk saves more money than buying on daily basis. Before you buy in bulk make sure to have good storage facilities. Also, have a budget and make a list when you go out shopping.
  3. Check Expiry Dates: Always make sure to check the expiry or best before dates of food products as it will allow you to know how long you can store a food item. Doing this will save losses as a result of throwing away unused food products. Note that there is a difference between expiry date and best before dates. A food product cannot be used once its expiry date has been reached but it may be used after its best before date.
  4. Home Cooked Meals: Home cooked meals are comparatively cheaper than meals prepared outside.
  5. Package Leftovers: Instead of throwing away leftovers, package it well for use later. It saves you both time and money and some leftovers can even be used in making new dishes.
  6. Backyard Gardening: You can also plant some vegetables, fruits and food crops at home. It does not only save you money but also makes available fresh and safe food for the household. It is also an environmental sustainable action and helps to keep you active.
  7. For physical activity, opt for less costly activities like brisk walking, jogging, skipping, dancing and use the local public parks, gyms and sport facilities.
